All over the city public buildings are being classified – with yellow being restricted use, green being clear to use, and red being unsafe (don’t enter or occupy). Buildings are coming down as well, and you can go to the Christchurch City Council website for updates on just which ones are being demolished. There is a dedicated earthquake information section on the website at http://www.ccc.govt.nz/thecouncil/newsmedia/mediareleases/earthquake.aspx

It’s a pity to hear and read about the earthquake in wonderful Christchurch. I hope the reconstruction will tackle as quickly as possible.

I have just been looking around the city councils advice about water and portaloos for your beautiful city, the basics of our life. Hopefully these problems will be sorted out quickly, the same with the power. Is yours back on now? Paul

Hi Paul, we’ve got power (had a small outage this morning after a big aftershock). Still need to boil water. The porta-loos are for worse affected areas, I’m in Mt Pleasant and we’ve gotten off very lightly (and I feel some guilt about that).
