Sandcastle Competition at New Brighton Beach

February 2, 2013

There was a sandcastle competition on today at New Brighton beach. I’d missed the last one they had, so wasn’t sure what I was going to see. I was blown away by the work put into them. They were all in good in their own way, but some were just outstanding – the ape mother in particular.

Little kids seemed to really like this one! Lots of giggles.

They’re mad for Murals in New Brighton

January 3, 2013

It’s been a few months since I’ve been down the New Brighton Mall (and it’s alleyways). What a difference! Back in November 2012, local artists were called upon to paint artworks on empty walls as part of Mural Madness – here’s some of the photos I snapped today of some of my favourites.

Love this! It would look at home on someone’s wall.

Very cute!

New Brighton is a seaside suburb of Christchurch and it was hit pretty badly by the earthquakes. But even before the quakes the area was quite depressed – with the retail district inundated with 2 dollar shops. A plan for re-developing New Brighton has just been released by the City Council. You can view the plan for New Brighton at http://www.ccc.govt.nz/thecouncil/policiesreportsstrategies/SuburbsRejuvenationProgramme/NewBrightonMasterPla.aspx

Fireworks at New Brighton Pier

November 5, 2012

These are the Guy Fawkes fireworks that are let off on the New Brighton Pier. I was standing on the top of Mt Pleasant hill with my big lens. I couldn’t even see where the pier was, so I’m pretty lucky to have gotten this shot :)

It was pretty cold up the hill! Winter seems to have come back to visit us this week. But it was worth it to have a crack at these shots.

Foggy Morning at the New Brighton Pier

September 30, 2012

New Brighton Pier this Morning, click for a larger version

I was at New Brighton Pier this morning to meet friends for coffee at the Salt on the PierĀ  cafe. I did not take my camera along, as I’ve taken a lot of pier photos over the years. So mother nature decided to give me a small reminder that I should never leave the house without my real camera! The fog was very dramatic. I had my cellphone handy (Samsung Galaxy II), so luckily I got a shot. I never expected it to be any good though, so I’m rather pleased. It’s had a little bit of work done on it in Lightroom and Photoshop, but not much.

Repeat after me, Never Leave the House without your Camera!

Here’s the video I took of the beach while the Tsunami siren was being test. Not loud enough I think.

New Brighton Early Morning in the Rain

August 12, 2012

Not a wonderful day for photos today, it’s raining and quite cold. But despite that a few friends and I met at the pier to take what photos we could. It’s beautiful no matter the weather… though I would not recommend shooting in low light with a almost flat camera battery (even with a tripod). My new charged battery was left on the charger back at the house :(

It’s apparently going to rain most of this week as a low has settled over the us… so it could be a challenging week for photography!
