Bruce and I at the top of Mt Oxford. It has been a goal of mine to climb up Mt Oxford some day, and today I finally achieved it. We went with some friends of ours and picked quite a hot day to do it on! It was so beautiful at the top – 360 degree views – it was almost too hard to take it all in! The climb up is quite strenuous and in places it’s very steep. However, I preferred the climb up to the climb down, as it was practically down hill all the way and quite hard on the feet and the brain (all that concentrating and focusing on not falling over!).
Mt Oxford is 1364 metres up – though you start at about 300 metres as the township Oxford is at 300 metres. Oxford is about a 1 hour drive north of Christchurch and is a beautiful place. If you are not game for a walk up Mt Oxford (it takes 6 hours return) you might want to consider doing the Ryde Falls instead.
