Spire in Latimer Square by Neil Dawson

March 10, 2014

The Spire is a new sculpture by Neil Dawson (who also did The Chalice in Cathedral Square). The Spire is suspended on wires in Latimer Square, just in front of the Traditional Cathedral. From what I have read online, it will be there for a few years. The spire is inspired by the Spire from the Christchurch Cathedral.

The Chalice with Floral Display

February 28, 2014

The Festival of Flowers has been on and in the Square there are quite a few floral displays, including this one that surrounds the Chalice sculpture. I rather like it and think it would be kind of neat if it stayed!

Easter Island Sculpture at the Arts Centre

August 28, 2013

This sculpture is in the Arts Centre (near the old Dux de Lux). It was a gift to Christchurch from Chile and was carved by Tebo from Rapa Nui (Easter Island).  It commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the bilateral relations between New Zealand and Chile.

June 11, 2013

A view of the Flour Power sculpture from inside. From a distance it looks like a sheaf of wheat. You can learn more about the meaning of the sculpture at the artist’s website – Regan Gentry.
