Wild Pink Flowers in Cashmere

November 6, 2012

Pretty in pink. I went up the Cashmere Hill this afternoon to find some street art to photograph. I ended up at the Sign of the Takahe and went for a walk to the lookout. These pink flowers drew me in and became my subject of choice for today. It’s funny how that happens, often what I set out to photograph gets discarded for a totally unexpected vista. Unashamedly pink and pretty too.

A very busy bee

October 11, 2012

Snapped in my garden this afternoon.

Here’s a few other photos from my garden. The poor old Monarch is not looking good – I’m guessing it’s on its last days.

Foggy Morning at the New Brighton Pier

September 30, 2012

New Brighton Pier this Morning, click for a larger version

I was at New Brighton Pier this morning to meet friends for coffee at the Salt on the PierĀ  cafe. I did not take my camera along, as I’ve taken a lot of pier photos over the years. So mother nature decided to give me a small reminder that I should never leave the house without my real camera! The fog was very dramatic. I had my cellphone handy (Samsung Galaxy II), so luckily I got a shot. I never expected it to be any good though, so I’m rather pleased. It’s had a little bit of work done on it in Lightroom and Photoshop, but not much.

Repeat after me, Never Leave the House without your Camera!

Here’s the video I took of the beach while the Tsunami siren was being test. Not loud enough I think.

Bird Watching this Lunchtime

September 18, 2012

A Royal Spoonbill, Heathcote Estuary

I was having my lunch when I noticed a Royal Spoonbill working its way along the Heathcote river (the estuary). They are such comical looking birds and very methodical in the way they scoop along the edges of the river for their lunch. I’ve seen large flocks of Spoonbills in the same spot, but today there was just this lone bird going about its business.

After spending a bit of time taking photos of the Spoonbill, my attention was drawn by the seagulls that were flying around – there were quite a few of them and they seemed very active – swooping in an out of the estuary.

A shag – they feed on the eels in the estuary. I’ve watched several shags have an epic battle over an eel before. They will actually grab each other around the necks with their bills and force the eel out of each other’s throats, snatching it away – this can happen over and over again until the final victor wins.

I’ve become quite fascinated with sea gulls – they are fantastic to photograph as they are so common you can get a lot of practice in!

Aromaunga Flowers in Heathcote

September 12, 2012

Aren’t they beautiful? And the best bit of all is they are very reasonably priced, so you can spoil yourself to a bunch of divine smelling freesias or some colourful tulips.

The bouquet – purchased as a gift for a special lady

I got the flowers from Aromaunga Flowers. They were previously on Bridle Path Road but since the February earthquake they have been on Port Hills road opposite the French Bakery. I discovered them a few years back when they were on Bridle Path Road and used to treat myself to a bunch every now and then. I’m always surprised when people have not heard of them, or have heard of them, but have never gone in for a look. I highly recommend it. I came away today with a beautiful bouquet of flowers I selected (they were a gift). The flowers are grown in Heathcote and are just stunning. I think it is a truly special place. I’m sure my mood went up considerably just being around all those flowers.
