185 Empty Chairs
185 chairs. 185 lives lost. Tomorrow is the anniversary of the devastating earthquake that killed 185 people and injured many more.
The chairs were painted by Pete Majendie as an act of remembrance. They are on display on Madras Street (where the Baptist Church once stood).

Very moving!!
So very poignant and symbolic
Wow – my parents got married in that church. Can’t believe it’s gone. Been ages since I went that side of town. Can you walk/drive there now??
Yes, you can drive down Kilmore St. An incredibly powerful and tangible way of communicating the sense of loss we have all felt since that terrible day a year ago. Bravo Peter Majendie.
A very touching and poignant reminder as to the scope of the devestation to human life as a consequnce of the forces of nature.
Thoughtful and powerful work Peter Majende .
I planned to go there today, how strange to see your great photo. Have just been browsing through them as I often do. Keep up the great work.
